It is environmentally better to flare methane than release it to the atmosphere due to the high greenhouse gas rating of methane. The burning of methane converts the gas to carbon dioxide and water vapour. This combustion process may also produce small amounts of oxides of nitrogen. If the methane-burning process is not complete, trace amounts of carbon monoxide and residual unburnt hydrocarbons may also be released. Our flare technology is highly refined and reduces the risk of unburnt gas, and we ensure the cleanest burn achievable.
Flaring of gas is regulated under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (POEO Act) in sections 124 to 128. These sections require gas facilities to operate properly and efficiently and maintain equipment in an efficient condition. We’re highly informed of Australian Gas regulations.
