Cogeneration for Landfills

Cogeneration for Landfills

Landfill gas electricity generation

CHP cogeneration offers practical, long term solutions to control high energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by utilising methane produced on the landfill to generate power and heat. Inoplex cogeneration systems provide a cost-effective biomass energy generation for landfills and waste management facilities across Australia.

Want to lower the energy bills in your business?

Inoplex are the experts at getting the most out of your energy requirements. Whether you need electricity, heating or even cooling, we can help develop a solution for you.

Waste to energy solutions

The inverter technology used to convert the electricity from the Inoplex Cogenerator can be customised for whatever use you need, from a single light bulb to the whole office or workshop.

Cogeneration can be used effectively for open and closed landfills, with closed being more effective due to the lack of activity involved in filling.

Benefits of Inoplex cogeneration

  • Deliver heat and power when you need it
  • Load following technology allows for variable heat and power requirements
  • Functions effectively with lower quality biogas
  • Provides a reliable back up power system
  • Removes reliance on grid electricity
  • Reduce greenhouse gas generated by landfill
  • Power generation using a renewable energy source
  • Highly efficient gas engine

Reducing the environmental effect of landfills

Using a landfill gas collection system to catch the generated biogas reduces the effect of the huge levels of methane emitted from landfills and dumps around the world. Landfills are the third largest producer of methane across the world, responsible for around 13% of the total emissions.

Australia is responsible for about 2% of this methane landfill gas production, which doesn’t seem like a lot but our small population is producing as much greenhouse gas as countries with much larger populace.

LFGE (landfill gas energy projects) are 90% reliable, reduce methane emissions, and offset greenhouse gas produced from traditional fossil fuel power. CHP systems are even more beneficial, with higher energy efficiency, increased savings, and a locally available biogas fuel source.

Opportunities exist to create an income for the landfill by selling on the power or heat to private businesses or other government facilities. Money can also be made from the sale of carbon credits.

With Australia’s grid electricity costs being one of the highest in the world it makes sense for council and private landfills to invest in alternative bioenergy sources.

Reduce leachate

Utilise the heat from the CHP cogeneration process to evaporate leachate, reducing volumes by around 90% and lowering removal and treatment costs. This feature further increases the energy efficiency of the cogeneration system.
